August Revolver Elk

In Wyoming we are fortunate to have a generous cow elk season to reduce populations. I took advantage of this opportunity and set out to fill the first revolver elk tag of 2023.

The morning started early at 4am. The first frost of the year was laying in the fields and the conditions just felt right. Working through the open wooded areas and crossing a few small fields we ran into massive elk sign and eventually hit a smell you will never forget….ELK!

The pace was slowed down to a minimum and the cow calls could be heard. As I was creeping through the woods elk were heard working through the woods behind us. I turned around to see 20 or so elk just over a small rise about 50 yards away. I took 10 or so steps and got into a firing position. The herd spread out a little and a cow was slightly separated from the herd. I then leveled my S&W 460 PC in the standing position and placed the Ultradot Gen2 30mm 2moa dot right behind the shoulder and began to apply pressure to the trigger. When the trigger broke an immediate reaction could be seen on target from the 240 grain Cutting Edge bullet. The cow was doing a slow walk and obviously going down but I went ahead and placed a second shot ending the hunt immediately.

Many meals will come from this early season elk. That was an awesome way to begin the 2023 season.
