This year I made it a point to hunt with a (almost) factory handgun and inexpensive shooting sticks. The goal here was to show that handgun hunting doesn’t have to be an expensive venture.
What has been done to the 629 PC gun we used.
A trigger job….it was clean before but lawyer heavy.
What will be done. By next season.
Uniform cylinder throats and recut the crown.
Trigger, crown, and throats are part of our standard accuracy package and doesn’t cost a bunch of money. (Around 200 shipped).
This Smith and Wesson shoots good. But after these few processes it should shoot great.
No amount of money spent on gear will replace range time and field shooting practice.
Onto the hunt.
Black hills national forest. 172-174 yards. Quartering hard towards me. Bullet entered in front of the shoulder and stopped just under the hide in front of the rear quarter.
He was hit twice with the range finder and he is a living moving critter that’s why we have the couple yard difference.
About a 200lb live weight. 8 point.
Penetration was over 2 feet. Perfect mushroom. Sierra 240 over 2400 starline brass. Pics of the bullet in the comments.
Shot was taken off Stoney point tent pole style shooting sticks from the kneeling.
The Burris FF3 sucked as expected. It’s auto brightness setting just put the dot on wide open trying to signal landing craft. I had to manually adjust it down. This thing will be going on a 22 or a shelf.
For the “that’s not ethical crowd” that will pop up due to the distance. I invite you to look at my website and ask around and you’ll get a feel that this isn’t my first distance rodeo with a wheelgun.
