Which .357
Quote from BobT on June 25, 2025, 1:54 pmI’m interested in a .357 magnum revolver for range use and hunting whitetails here in Missouri. I will use an optic, probably a red dot of some sort. I would like to stay under $1000.00 if possible. The local shop has a pretty nice .357 Blackhawk convertible but I’m kinda wanting a double action revolver for whatever reason. I think I can probably get the Blackhawk for around $600.00 out the door. What are your thoughts on the wheel guns?

Quote from GuyM on June 26, 2025, 7:33 pmA double action may fit your hand better. Perhaps that’s why you prefer them?
I’ve been loading for and using 357’s since the 1970’s. Not so much for hunting, though I’ve shot quite a few varmints & such with 357’s.
Both Ruger and Smith&Wesson produce strong & accurate 357’s. I don’t have much experience with Taurus, but ol’ Roy Yeager sure has had good results with one.
Honestly, buy the one you prefer and get really good with it through practice is my input.
Regards, Guy

our top competitors at HHC are all using them.

Quote from BlueAvenger on July 6, 2025, 5:41 pmhad my 9mm cyl changed to .357/44
You can’t run full power or the setback lockes it up, But normal loads work fine.

Quote from reflex264 on August 8, 2025, 8:18 amThe Ruger Blackhawks have been hit and miss for the last few years. I never hear of a bad BFR. An added bonus is that the BFR is already drilled and tapped and their scope mount is a great piece. As far as double actions go If you got lucky on one of the old Taurus Bangor Punta guns they are awesome. Hard to find and then to get a really good mounting system takes some gun-smithing. Taurus does have a mount ready .357 now but the guns are very hit and miss and from what I am hearing more miss than hit. The 686 is a stout piece and I have seen them in that price range. GP100s are very tough and easy to put an optic mount on. My favorite double action .357 is the Ruger Security Six. Fairly easy to set up for an optic and most of them shoot great. All of that said for an out of the box gun that is going to shoot well and already optic ready the BFR is going to be hard to beat. My buddy Darrell Kight just won the revolver class at the Adam Bender shoot with one.
