I have used red dot optics for over a decade. There are two basic designs, open reflex and tube. I have settled on two brands for my red dot needs. Trijicon for an open reflex and Ultradot for a tube design.
Ultradot has a long track record with handgun hunters going back to JD Jones using them on his hand cannons. NRA bullseye competitors have used them since they were brought to market.
Ultradot was the first red dot I started running around 2005. I had no idea of the quality at that time as it came used on a handgun I purchased. Quickly I began to appreciate the quality of the glass compared to the other dots on the market. I took both deer and hogs with that first Ultradot.
The Ultradot is a tube design with Japanese glass that is very clear. The overall design of the sight is light weight which is a major plus for the hard kicking handguns. Under recoil the sight try’s to stay in place as the gun moves to the rear; so the less mass in optics, mounts, and rings the better. Ultradot is also known for having repeatable adjustments for impact correction in windage and elevation. Many bullseye shooters dial their adjustments for the yard line and Ultradot also makes a target turret model of their sight.
Fast forward to 2021…..
The first year of Handgun Hunter’s Competiton which was sponsored by Ultradot. Following the match I contacted Heather Roach of Ultradot and said “I have an idea” and much to my amazement she didn’t hang up then! I requested a sight that they didn’t currently make. My wish list included a 30mm tube for a wider field of view and more light to the eye for low light shooting and most importantly a 2 MOA dot!
Less than a year later and it was in production!
I have used one of their 30mm gen2 2moa for rabbit hunting with great success in 2022 and this year for 2023 I will be running one on a S&W 460 PC for elk.During practice this summer I have had no issues making hits on vital sized steel to 200 yards which is my max range for the 460.
